MUSEO MINERALOGICO LUIGI CELLERI (MUM)
In San Piero in Campo, there is a museum well worth a visit. It is the MUM, which exhibits an exceptional mineralogical heritage.
The famous MUM of San Piero in Campo is home to a remarkable mineralogical heritage. Indeed, the island of Elba enjoys a worldwide reputation for the diversity and richness of its mineralogical deposits. In this respect, do not miss the superb collections in mineralogy and crystallography in this museum.
Let's start with a little bit of history... The minerals found on Mount Capanne are legendary. The samples found towards the end of the 19th century are on display in the most prestigious museums in the world, and embellish famous private collections; but some of them are fortunately back in San Piero in Campo. Today, several rocks, minerals and gemstones light up the MUM, this museum founded in 2013 to celebrate the historical and natural grandeur of the region.
This museum is as interesting as it is active. In addition to the classic guided tours, it organizes, upon reservation, themed excursions and outings in the company of gentle donkeys (a great walk to do with the children!), on the "Vie del Granito" (Granite Ways). This is a network of interesting paths covering archaeological and mineralogical sites, in the heart of lush nature.
The MUM is dedicated to Luigi Celleri (1828-1900), a mineralogist from San Piero in Campo, who made several important discoveries, including the "gommoidi" quartz and examples of wollastonites.
