FORTE FOCARDO
Fort of 1678 located at the top of a rocky ridge, accessible on foot from the beach of Naregno.
At the top of a rocky ridge, in a dominant and strategic position along the coast, Fort Focardo is accessible from the beach of Naregno; an opportunity for a pleasant walk. Erected in 1678, under Spanish rule, it has a star-shaped plan reinforced with bastioned walls. In the 1920s, the great writer Raffaello Brignetti (born on the island of Giglio in 1921 and died in Milan in 1978) stayed here; his father was then lighthouse keeper. Today the fort houses accommodation for the military personnel of the Italian Navy.
