SAINT-JEAN DE CRKOLEZ CHURCH (KISHA E SHËN XHONIT - CRKVA SVETOG JOVANA U CRKOLEZU)
This small Serbian Orthodox parish church was commissioned by a local nobleman, Lord Radoslav, in 1335, who entered the orders under the name of John and was buried here. In 1395, the church was offered as a Metoch (outbuilding) to the great Russian monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos (Greece). It has been classified as a cultural monument of exceptional importance by Serbia since 1958. Inside there are some fragments of 14th century frescoes, but most of the current decoration was made in 1672-1673 by the great Serbian painter Radul. Note in particular a beautiful scene from the Last Judgment and the inscriptions written in the vernacular language and not in Old Slavonic, which is quite rare. The iconostasis retains its eight large icons, also painted by Radul. The church also serves as a storage place for icons from other nearby churches that have been destroyed. Finally, in the garden the old mulberry tree is at the base a branch of the "Sham mulberry tree", the oldest tree in the country, located in the patriarchal monastery of Peć
