BANGABANDHU MEMORIAL MUSEUM
The private residence of the Father of the Nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was converted into a museum-memorial in 1997. It was here that he was murdered on 15 August 1975 with a large proportion of his family members. Only his two daughters, then in Germany, escaped the massacre. You can see the personal effects of "Mujib" by following the path indicated. The house was kept in the state, the impact of bullets in the walls and blood spots included.
Ground Floor: rooms on the ground floor are reception rooms. Some have been converted into offices allowing the museum to be administered. Others have been retained, but it is not possible to enter them. You can observe them through the windows.
First floor: You access it through a staircase that was added to the back of the house. The first piece contains personal effects of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, such as photos, shirts, glasses, or writings. Then you go to the family living room, located on the level, where a television that would make the collectors green. The couple bedroom overlooks the living room. It was retained as also, even if the maculés sheets of blood were changed. You will nevertheless see the impact of bullets and traces of blood protected by plaques in Plexiglas. At the time the army entered the house, the Rahman family was in the chamber. When army officers demolished the wall with the help of tanks, Mujib rushed into the staircase where he was slaughtered. Here too, ball impacts are protected by Plexiglas's plates. The killers then entered the chamber and shot the wife of Mujib and their three sons.
Second floor: This floor has rooms and a huge terrace. As on the ground floor, you can only observe the pieces through the windows. At the time of the murder of Mujib, family cousins were there for a marriage. They were also murdered.
On the back of the house, another more modern building exposes the life and work of the Father of the Nation through a series of personal and public photos and press articles. Everything is translated into English. You can access it by a lift and get off the two floors by an inside staircase. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's life being closely linked to Bangladesh's independence, you have here a very good synthesis of the major events that shook the country from partition with India until independence. The photos testify to the major role played by Mujib, who met Gandhi before independence, became minister during the Pakistani period and galvanized the crowds by leading the Bangladeshi people on the Path to Independence. In addition to these photos and excerpts from press articles, some objects inherited from the Liberation War are exhibited.
It is undoubtedly the best museum in Dhaka, with a very well-worked setting. The museum is also a pilgrimage place and the rooms of the house can soon be crowded. It is better to come in the week and in the morning to avoid the attendance. If you are interested in the history of the country and have little time, it is essential to come to the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. But beware it is forbidden to enter a bag, lighter or cigarettes, which you can leave to the deposit. The search for entry is very strict and the street is even forbidden to traffic.
