LOHAR KUTHI
The "Iron Palace" or Lohar Kuthi is also called "Château d'Alexandra". It was built for the visit of the Grand Duke Boris of Russia in 1902 by the maharaja Surya Kanta. Inspired by a Russian dacha, its iron and wood structure was designed to withstand earthquakes and ground floor elevation to deal with the flooding of the nearby Brahmaputra. The staircase is framed on both sides of two statues of women in the robe, in the purest antique style. The building serves as a library at the School of Teacher Training and does not visit. But its amazing look at the crossroads of Russia and Bangladesh deserves a look if you are around.
