CARMICHAEL COLLEGE
It is the largest university in Bangladesh, both by size and by the number of students enrolled in it (25 000). Inaugurated in 1916 by the first governor of Bengal, Sir Carmichael, it was built under the impetus of local zamindars, including Kumar Gopal Lal Roy, the owner of Tajhat. Its impressive 100 m long façade plunges into a landscape of orchards and ponds. A very good example of a mixture of British and Mughal architecture, it is unique in the region. Its dome is dominated by long buildings of great finesse, pierced by arches, giving it a false air of mosque. In the south of the city, away from its hustle and bustle, the Carmichael College can be the subject of a pleasant walk.
