ST. PAUL'S CHURCH
This amazing Catholic church was built in 1992 thanks to the obstinacy of an Italian missionary installed in Mongla since the 1950 s. Its recent construction does not give it great historical value. No, its originality lies in its architectural style which includes elements borrowed from Buddhism and Islam. The arches are in lotus flower, the warhead-shaped windows allude to the Gothic but also to the openings on the mosques of the period of the Sultanate. The roofs are decorated with friezes with crosses of St. George, but also a star surrounded by a growing moon. Inside, no cross plan as in our European churches, but a large rectangular room, private of benches and more thinking of a prayer room than a church span. Through its synchrétisme, this church pays tribute to the religious tolerance that crosses the vast majority of the Bangladeshi people.
The church is attached to the Saint Paul school, which is right next door and is managed by Italian missionaries.
