BENQUE SEMANA SANTA
Go there and contact
Holy Week is a sacred time for the Latino community, which is concentrated in Benque Viejo on the Guatemalan border.
During Holy Week, the streets of the small Guatemalan border town of Benque Viejo del Carmen are covered with a carpet of coloured sawdust, over which processions depicting the Passion of Christ take place. A traditional Central American festival, full of color and lively music. English-speaking Belize takes on its most Latin facet on this occasion. And let's not forget that in the Cayo district, Spanish is king. If you've enjoyed it, be sure to come back to the village for the annual festival in July.
