LUBAANTUN
Maya archaeological site of Lubaantun, featuring a unique stone construction with no trace of mortar
Located a few kilometers from San Pedro Columbia, the Mayan archaeological site of Lubaantun is certainly the most interesting and famous in the district. Its literal name translates as "the place of falling stones". The site is notably known for its total absence of engraved funerary stelae, as well as for its very particular construction method, dating from the Late Classic period, which consists of an assembly of stones without any trace of mortar, and with rounded building corners. Several Mayan communities reported this site at the turn of the century, and two initial explorations were carried out in 1903 and 1926. This was followed by a long period of looting by treasure hunters over a period of almost 40 years, with no surveillance of the site. During this period, Mitchell-Hedges is said to have found a crystal skull, later sold at auction. Later, American universities took an interest in the site, and helped to protect it.
Getting there - From the Autoroute du Sud, take the Silver Creek exit, then pass the village of San Miguel, then San Pedro Columbia. Then turn right, and continue on the gravel road for about 3 kilometers. You've arrived. By bus from Punta Gorda, departing Monday to Saturday at 11:30 am. However, Chun's Bus will leave you a few kilometers from your final destination. Good luck, it's a long way, but the beauty of the site is well worth it.
