FORTRESS OF POGRADJË
The former Byzantine fort (Kalaja e Pogragjës-Tvrdava Podgrada) is located on a 50 m high hill at 567 m above sea level and offers a magnificent view of the Lapušnica Gorge. The brick and stone structure visible today dates from the 6th century. It covers an area of 1.2 hectares with a fortified enclosure consisting of three walls and a large square tower 8 m on each side and 10 m high. The fortress was part of a network of strongholds built during the reign of Justinian to counter the Slavs coming from the north.
