MLIKË MOSQUE (XHAMIA E MLIKËS - MLIKA DŽAMIJA)
An inscription on this mosque, although it is quite recent, indicates the date 1268. This would mean that the building was built more than a century before the Battle of Kosovo Polje (1389) and almost two centuries before the beginning of the Ottoman era (1455). It is highly unlikely, but a local thesis is that a handful of Arab families banished from Syria settled here... while the Ottoman Empire did not yet exist (1299). The defenders of this smoky theory can be found in a district of the city called Halepovci, meaning Aleppo. If Syrians fled Aleppo in those years, they were Christians and found refuge with the Byzantines. As for the Islamisation of the local populations, it only took place from the 17th century onwards. What is very old, however, are the fake news, which did not wait for Donald Trump.
