The documents mentioning the existence of the Plaça Major date from the 14th century. It is a quadrangular arcaded plaza surrounded by forty arches in different styles: semicircular, low arch and lancet. It is the most important square in Banyoles and continues to be an essential place of celebration. It has been awarded the distinction of Cultural Good of National Interest by the Catalan government since 1999. The shops and cafés installed under the arches are housed in what, in medieval times, served as stables, workshops or shops.
