MOULIN DE LA FORGE: PAPER FACTORY
Paper mill installed in an old municipal building allowing to contemplate paper craftsmen exercising their craft.
The Fraga paper mill is housed in a former municipal building, built in 1685, and known as the Farga d'Aram (Aram Forge) i di Molí Paperer Escatllar (Escatllar Paper Mill). After leatherworking, paperworking were the two activities carried out here until its closure in the mid-twentieth century. Molí de la Farga is a small, traditional paper mill run by Sastres Paperers, formed by Diego López (paper craftsman), Jordi Torrent (paper craftsman and company manager) and Mamen Cagigós (activities manager). Handmade, one by one, from fiber, mainly for the fine art market. The process demands precision, patience and expertise. Having the opportunity to contemplate paper craftsmen practicing their craft is very instructive, and all the more so as the activity is on the verge of extinction. The no less friendly Mamen Cagigós will accompany you on a tour of the workshop and tell you all about the history of the place, before taking you into the cellar of the building where the remains of the forge can be found. A forge which, of course, took advantage of the rec major which, passing by to activate the wheels, enabled them to set in motion the hammer, a gigantic hammer-hammer. A fascinating visit. And a visit to Banyoles is highly recommended.
