DYEING HOUSE (LLOTJA DEL TINT)
A 15th century gothic building with many high quality exhibitions
This llotja del tint (dyeing hall) is a 15th-century Gothic building, which was originally dedicated to textile dyeing. In the Middle Ages, Banyoles had an important economic activity, largely driven by the textile sector. The carders received woollen cloth and dyed it in the vats distributed under the ogival arches that form the ceiling. The products were then marketed throughout the Mediterranean area as banyolesos sheets (Banyoles fabrics). Although the building now has two floors, at the time it had only one, leaving enough ceiling height to allow for better ventilation, as the products used were toxic. As in most of the industrial activities in Banyoles, the artisan dyers took advantage of the passage of the canals: the water from the rec major passed through the Lloja del Tint, was used in the vats, before being discharged directly into the same place. Since its rehabilitation in the 1970s, which has preserved its original structure, it is one of the few Catalan factories dating from the Middle Ages. This space has served and still serves as an exhibition room for contemporary art, mainly used by the TintXXI association, which is very active and gives conceptual art. An area in which the town of Banyoles has become a national reference. It will be the occasion to see many exhibitions of great quality.
