CENTRE DE VISITEURS
Verges is a charming village situated on a small hill next to the River Ter. Agriculture and livestock farming are the main economic activities in the area. The village has preserved its medieval atmosphere, with a castle surrounded by well-kept walls and defensive towers. Visitors can stroll through the streets as they would in medieval times. The castle, built between 1115 and 1164, has been the scene of numerous battles throughout its history. Today, it is the property of the village town hall. In the center of the village are two churches dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, called Sant Julià and Santa Basilisa. A unique procession of popular culture, the Dance of Death, takes place during this celebration. Five skeletons dance to the sound of drums, accompanied by a procession of four figures illuminating the area with torches. The Verges Dance of Death has been declared a national event by the Spanish government and is one of the most important liturgies on the Costa Brava. The history of Verges is also linked to Lluís Llach, a Catalan singer and anti-Franco resistance fighter, who was born in Girona in 1948 but spent his childhood in Verges.
