MEDES ISLANDS - ILLES MEDES
With a total area of about 23 hectares, these islands are a very interesting natural site
Approximately 1 nautical mile from the beach of l'Estartit, these seven islands extend the limestone massif of Montgrí and form part of the Montgrí Natural Park, the Medes Islands and the Baix Ter, (the mouth of the river Ter). With a total surface area of approximately 23 hectares, they constitute a very interesting natural site due to the diversity of the fauna and ecosystems that can be found there (more than 1,300 different species and dolphins regularly stay there). This has earned it the title of the best reserve in the western Mediterranean. As it is a protected area, it cannot be visited and fishing is prohibited. On the other hand, many companies offer boat trips from L'Estartit to observe the seabed from the transparent tanks of their boats. It is also one of the favourite destinations for scuba diving enthusiasts, whether experts or beginners, due to the different depths that favour all types of diving. At less than 10 metres you will find gorgonians, corals, starfish, octopus and scampi. Below 20 metres, the density of crustaceans and fish is greater and the time will come for posidonia forests and grouper, the big star of the place. Close to the islands, divers will be able to discover the Regio Messina, a boat that was sunk in 1991 and is the largest wreck on the Costa Brava. And the most expert divers can visit caves, such as the Vaca or the Sardina.
