MONTSORIU CASTLE
Visit the castle of Montsoriu located at the foot of Montseny and experience an impressive dive into the past of Catalonia
Located on a hilltop over 600 meters above sea level, at the foot of Montseny and near the Guilleries mountain range, the castle straddles the towns of Arbúcies and Sant Feliu de Buixalleu. It overlooks the valley of the Tordera and the whole Mediterranean corridor, which extends from Girona to Granollers. It is the most imposing Gothic castle in Catalonia and one of the most important medieval enclosures in the peninsula. This strategic location made it the military headquarters of the Viscounts of Cabrera when this family was one of the most powerful in Catalonia, along with Peter the Ceremonious (14th century). Throughout its more than one thousand years of history (the first references date back to 1002), Montsoriu was occupied by the Iberians, before being used as a strategic defense center for more than 500 years, a reference point for the Catalan nobility and an impregnable fortress due to its impeccable construction. After undergoing numerous transformations throughout its history, until the 14th and 15th centuries, it was no longer used for its military function and was transformed into a residential palace, with all the changes that this implied. Since July 2021, this castle hosts an interpretation center of the Viscounty of Cabrera, articulated around 3 rooms. The opportunity to watch, among other things, a documentary on its historical and heritage legacy in the Selva and the route of the 13 municipalities that will allow to follow it on the ground.
