CASTLE OF MONTAGUT - OR DU CÓS
Visit the castle of Montagut whose first mentions go back to 1070 and admire the remains of its large tower
The first mention of Montagut castle dates back to 1070, and was discovered in a treaty of allegiance from nobles Pere and Arnau Guillem, of the county of Besalú, to Count Bernat II. In 1119, the castle passed into the hands of Countess Ermessenda, who later ceded it to her nephew Udalard II, Viscount of Bas. During the 13th century, it came into the possession of the Counts of Empúries until 1339, when it was transferred to the Crown under the reign of Pere III. The castle's main feature is its large circular tower, with an internal diameter of around 5 meters and walls over 1.5 meters thick. The part that can be seen today corresponds to the lower level, now covered by a false dome installed to preserve the remains of the tower. Remains of the surrounding walls can also be seen. The courtyard of the château, once used as a presbytery, is now privately owned, which considerably limits the view of the ruins. A stone's throw from the castle is the Mare de Déu del Cós sanctuary, from which the castle takes its name, and the old castle chapel, first mentioned in 1105. The latter was completely renovated in the Baroque period, and inside the temple was a 12th-century image of the Virgin and Child, sadly destroyed in 1936. A visit is recommended, if only for the panoramic view.
