CASTLE OF PUIG-ALDER AND CHAPEL OF SAN SALVADOR
Don't miss the Puig-Alder castle on top of San Salvador mountain
Located at the top of Mount San Salvador, it is one of three castles that depended on the feudal area of Hostoles, with those of Hostoles and Colltort. These three fortresses were part of the th century of the defensive line separating the dioceses of Vic and Girona. At the end of the th century, a chapel dedicated to San Salvador was built next to the building, and although original Romanesque, the whole complex owes its more modern aspect not to the earthquakes of the th century, which save the castle but changes made during the Middle Ages and modern times. During a restoration campaign in 1984, the sculpture of a Virgin corresponding to the style of the th century was discovered, which was named the Mare del Salvador (the Mother of the Saviour) and is now at the Girona Art Museum. Every Saturday preceding Easter holidays, a mass is celebrated in the chapel, in honour of this discovery.
