The remains of this ancient synagogue were discovered in 1852 by explorer Edward Robinson. The last excavations on the site date back to 1987-1989. Built from mortier assembled limestone blocks, it was in the centre of a village whose homes were built from black basalt rocks, the most common rock in the region. Archaeologists believe that the building was built in two phases from the fourth century. It would have been used until the th century.
