GRASSLANDS NATIONAL PARK
Grasslands National Park is home to a variety of wildlife and offers many on-site activities.
It is one of the few surviving natural grasslands on the continent and reflects what grasslands were like for millennia before they were plowed by pioneers. The history of this land goes back millions of years. Thousands of fossils have been found in the park, revealing that land and water dinosaurs once lived here. Ancient teepee rings and bison drives are some of the remnants left by the First Nations who once lived in this wilderness. The park's wildlife is diverse and includes bison, deer, antelope, coyote, red fox, black-footed ferret and black-tailed prairie dog. Along the Frenchman River Valley there are also reptile and amphibian species that are virtually unheard of elsewhere in Canada, including the prairie rattlesnake and horned toad.
Many activities are offered on site: interpretive trails, an 11 km scenic drive (Badlands Parkway), horseback riding, mountain biking, kayaking, geocaching, guided tours, etc. Overnight camping (including backcountry camping in both summer and winter) and tent camping are also available. Please note that while the park is open year-round, many services and facilities are not available at certain times.
