BISBAL CERAMICS MUSEUM
Museum allowing to discover the ceramics under all its aspects, decorative but also industrial.
Ceramics has been one of the town's main economic activities since the 13th century, but it was not until the 19th century that the industry reached its golden age. Production was marketed not only in Catalonia, but also in Spain's overseas colonies. After a decline in traditional ceramics at the beginning of the 20th century, tourism contributed to its revival, but today it is also used for construction and decoration. A visit to this museum is an opportunity to discover a fine example of industrial architecture, as it is located in a former factory set up in 1922 to manufacture ceramic coverings. Many elements of this former use have been preserved, including clay sieving pits, chimneys and kilns. The site houses a permanent exhibition representative of the museum's collections (6,000 objects in all). The pieces on display provide an insight into both the collection and production practices. You'll discover ceramics in all their guises, both decorative and industrial, with visual explanatory panels to facilitate understanding. In a small room, you can also watch a video, in French, presenting the history of this production and its importance for the city. While many of the old ceramics are on display, a large showcase also showcases objects produced today, with their creative and innovative visuals.
