CALONGE CASTLE
This castle-fortress with its spectacular defences is the setting for the New Wine Festival in November and for medieval weekends
This castle-fortress with its spectacular defences is one of the largest in the Baix Empordà region. Founded before the 11th century by the Counts of Girona, it was largely destroyed by fire in 1485. It was rebuilt and passed through several hands before becoming the property of the Dukes of Sessa. Today, many of the buildings in this complex are occupied by cultural and municipal spaces. Every summer it hosts a music festival. It is also the setting for the New Wine Festival in November and for medieval weekends.
