GREENLANDICUM ARBORETUM
Arboretum created in 1954, an arctic garden with a living collection of trees and shrubs, typical taiga conifers.
The commune is home to Greenland's only arboretum, located not far from the airport on the Mellemlandet ridge. This nearly 150-hectare "arctic" garden features a living collection of trees and shrubs planted since its creation in 1954 (no fewer than 110 species!), including typical taiga conifers such as Siberian larch(Larix sibirica), lodgepole pine(Pinus contorta), Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris) and white spruce(Picea glauca). Other alpine and arctic species from all over the northern hemisphere include subalpine fir from Canada, downy birch from Finland, Norway spruce, aspen from Iceland and choke cherry from Sweden! Some of these trees have already produced cones, and their offspring have even been observed. The forest is also being used as an experimental site to monitor the impact of global warming on certain species. According to a team of scientists, it is highly likely that by 2100, Greenland will be much more densely covered with trees and shrubs than it is today. It's a magical experience, with the sound of the wind in the leaves... and a spectacular view of the glacier at the summit! The walk continues to a ruin and then a waterfall. In September, the yellow and red colors become sumptuous.
