THE HISTORIC CENTRE
Historic center with colonial port, Greenland's oldest fountain, blacksmith's store and Lutheran church.
The colonial port is home to Greenland's oldest fountain (1932), encircled by several historic buildings, including the oldest building constructed of black logs, formerly the blacksmith's store. Designed by the royal Danish architect Kirkerup, it was conceived in Denmark, then delivered in parts and assembled on site in 1804. Today, the buildings have new functions (restaurants, cafés, shops, museums, etc.). The fountain, depicted with whales spouting into the water, was for a long time the only fountain in the country, until the Sisimiut fountain was built. Nearby is the bright red Lutheran Church of Our Saviour (or Annaasisitta Oqaluffia). Commissioned and built in the Norwegian town of Drammen, it was moved in pieces and assembled on site in 1832. The church was renovated and rebuilt several times, until the new, more modern-looking Gertrud Rasch Church was built in 1973 to make up for the lack of space. Beautiful concerts with choirs are regularly held here. In front of the former church, you'll find a memorial stone in honour of missionary Hans Egede and his wife Gertrud Rasch. Not far away is the open-air market, where hunters and fishermen come to sell the day's catch, and the port, where you can admire all the local maritime activity, as well as all the ships that take you on excursions in the region.
