Excursions to Nanortalik to discover peaks to the east, mountains to the south and the Tasermiut fjord during boat expeditions.
From sea to mountain top, Nanortalik is surrounded by powerful nature. To the east are many fearsome peaks that seem to pierce the sky, while to the west float huge icebergs surrounded by Arctic wildlife. In short, the possibilities for discovering Nanortalik's nature are as numerous as your imagination!
For the day hiker, there are several trails to choose from, including the one leading to the magnificent panoramic view to the south of Nanortalik, or up to the heights of Ravnejfeld (308 m, "Raven Mountain", medium level) or Storfjeld (559 m, "Big Mountain", fairly difficult level), as well as to "Old Nanortalik" (Sissarissoq, easy level), just a few km from town. Maps are available from the tourist office.
You can then embark on one of the boat excursions to discover the magnificent Tasermiut Fjord, with its majestic glacier at the far end, which has already retreated considerably. Sailing here is a wonderful experience, as you visit one of the picturesque villages of Tasiussaq, Narsarmijit (Frederiksdal) or Aappilattoq. You'll feel as if time has stood still! While there's no public transport to reach them, or hotels to sleep in, ask the locals about this incredibly immersive experience. Further afield, the village of Alluitsup Paa, accessible via the Disko Line, is home to a hotel and fishermen who will be happy to show you around for a few kroner. Tip: if the local tour operators seem out of your budget, why not ask a fisherman to show you around for less?
As from Qaqortoq, you can also swim in the warm waters of Uunartoq, visit other nearby glaciers in the Sermilik and Christian Sund fjords, or go fishing in the magnificent Tasermiut fjord. Greenland's only natural forest grows 40 km from Nanortalik in what Greenlanders call the Qinngua Valley. Here, the trees grow to several metres in height. The more adventurous can try their hand at kayaking in the region, either on their own or with one of the local companies, or climb the granite Ketil mountain, reputed to be one of the world's highest climbing walls at 2,000 m! The area is indeed famous among the climbing and mountaineering community. After all that, you can go home decorated with an adventurer's medal!
