SISIMIUT MUSEUM
Museum displaying objects testifying to the history of Sisimiut, trade, Greenlandic maritime expeditions and more.
Located in former colonial buildings near the port, the Sisimiut Museum focuses on Greenlandic trade, industry and maritime expeditions in addition to the findings of ten years of archaeological excavation research near the city, providing an insight into the Saqqaq culture in the region 4,000 years ago. The museum houses a collection of domestic tools, an inventory of the old church with the original 1650 altarpiece and paintings from the 1790s. The exhibition also includes the remains of an 18th century kayak, the reconstruction of a traditional umiaq and the Poul Madsen collection of crafts, art, household items and ethnographic objects compiled over fifty years. More recently, the museum has acquired a collection of dog sleds that show the differences and similarities with other mushing cultures in the Arctic regions. You will also find interior reproductions as well as model aircraft and research equipment, testifying to the history of Sisimiut as a former American air base and research station. An exhibition of Greenlandic stones is located in another building. A model of the first fish factory tells the story of the development of the city's contemporary economy. You will also find an outdoor exhibition with the reconstruction of a Greenlandic peat house with period furniture.
