ARCTIC CIRCLE TRAIL
Wilderness trekking for 8 to 12 days, depending on the route from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut or the other way round.
The ACT is 160 km long and stretches between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut. This trail is designed for physically fit and experienced hikers. It's a splendid wilderness hike in total connection with nature, usually taking 8-12 days. The silence is incredible, so much so that you can hear your own heartbeat as you walk. Most travellers do the Kangerlussuaq-Sisimiut route, although there are also people who walk the other way around or even back! An additional route is currently under construction. The gradient rises from east to west. Please follow the code of conduct of leaving no trace and collecting all your garbage. There are 9 simple huts along the route, sleeping 6-10 people. Some have toilets. The cabins are free for all to use. Alternatively, you can camp out under the stars!
Between June and August, temperatures are warm, the sun is high, mosquitoes are present and the soil is rather damp. August is often more popular, with fewer mosquitoes and less damp ground. From August to September, temperatures are cool and it starts to snow in the mountains. A marathon is held at this time. From December to February, temperatures are cold, with snow and very short days; the days get longer in March and April. This is when the Arctic Circle Race cross-country skiing competition takes place.
