ICE SHEET
Tours to Kangerlussuaq to explore the ice cap and admire the spectacular view of lakes with icebergs.
This is Kangerlussuaq's must-see attraction. The ice cap begins at the upper end of the valley to the east of the town and presents a spectacular view not to be missed. The ice sheet can be reached at the end of a gravel road outside town. The nearest glacier (about 20 km from town) is called Glacier Russel, which is active and advances by 25 cm a year. The fairly flat road is good for walking and spending a little more time close to the ice for 2-3 days, and perhaps continuing further along the road to contemplate some of the surrounding lakes adorned with small floating icebergs. Be prepared for colder temperatures near the ice, due to cool winds blowing in from the ice sheet. You can get there by car, on foot or by bike. Albatros offers tours of Kangerlussuaq with very competent and friendly guides.
Don't get too close to the 80-metre-high ice cliffs of Russel Glacier, from which large blocks of ice can break off violently. Temperatures on the glacier can be 10°C lower than in Kangerlussuaq. Bring appropriate clothing.
Day or multi-dayexpeditions on the ice cap can be organized, and you can even spend a night there thanks to the camp set up on site by Albatros, i.e. igloo-shaped tents in which you will sleep in sleeping bags. An exceptional experience.
