PORT VICTOR AND THE EQI GLACIER
Boat excursions from Port Victor up the Ataa fjord to the majestic Eqi glacier.
Probably one of the most expensive excursions in Disko Bay, but by far the most fantastic! About 5 hours by boat up the magnificent Ataa fjord, you'll come face to face with the majestic Eqi glacier. The boat then shuts down the engines for an hour to let you listen to the glacier calving, and watch as voluminous chunks of ice fall in a deafening sound similar to the roar of a thunderstorm. In fact, the noise is continuous, as the cracking also occurs inside the glacier. Magical. A safety distance of 1.5 km is maintained because of the risk of certain waves becoming veritable tsunamis. But that's not all, Port Victor also has a history: it was here that the French Polar Expeditions led by Paul-Émile Victor established their base camp in the summer of 1948. The aim was to open up a trail to the ice cap and carry out a wide range of scientific surveys. They set up camp with 90 tons of equipment and 25 men. Their hut is still there on the southern edge of the bay, now a little further from the glacier due to the retreat of recent decades. It remains in a very poor state of repair, but several Frenchmen are lobbying the local authorities to try and renovate it - a project to be continued.
This fantastic excursion can be taken as a day trip by boat with World of Greenland, but requires two nights' accommodation at Glacier Lodge Eqi.
