TORNGAT MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
Park with the highest peak in northeastern North America, good address for an adventure stay off the beaten track.
A remote wilderness area with no development or road access, it is unlike any other park in the country, and you don't get there by accident. 9,700 km2 of tundra and mountains make up the landscape, including Mount D'Iberville, the highest peak in northeastern North America, which is located between Torngat Mountains (Labrador) and Kuururjuaq (Quebec) national parks. In the words of anthropologist Ernest W. Hawkes: "At the northern end of the Labrador coast is a range of high, barren, precipitous mountains that juts inland from the sea and which the Inuit of old regarded as the home of the supreme spirit of their mythology. The name they gave this region, Torngait, means "place inhabited by spirits" and is explained by the presence of Torngarsoak, whom they believed to control the lives of marine animals and whom they represented as a gigantic polar bear."
To get there, it is absolutely necessary to be accompanied by a guide. The Torngat Mountains Base Camp offers tour packages that include flights from Goose Bay to Saglek via Nain and boat transportation from Saglek to the base camp at St. John's Harbour in Saglek Bay. Meals, accommodation and guided excursions (hiking, mountaineering, climbing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, Nordic skiing, etc.) are also included. An adventure trip off the beaten path!
