SHIRAKABE DOZOGUN
The city is known above all for its historic and old shopping district, with its very photogenic white warehouses. These buildings were constructed along the small Tamagawa River during the Meiji Era (1868-1912) and early Showa Era (1926-1989). This group of white-walled buildings with red tiles were used as storage for different types of goods, such as soybeans and sake. Designated as an important conservation area for traditional buildings since 1998, Shirakabe Dozogun is still very well preserved. The streets are very pleasant and conducive to beautiful pictures. There is a resolutely peaceful atmosphere. One appreciates the many small stone bridges that cross the Tamagawa River to reach the warehouses, as well as the koi carp that splash around on them. One can still feel the atmosphere of the commercial activities that flourished at the time. Nowadays, these buildings no longer have the same function. In these streets you can find some handicraft or sake shops, restaurants, but also art galleries. One reaches the unusual Dairenji temple via a narrow street lined with lanterns. Do not hesitate to rent, for ¥500, an audioguide at the information center of the district. Ask for the "Kurayoshi Kikitabi". Information in English is provided along the walk according to the important points. You can also rent bicycles for ¥500. You should also bring a tourist map with more than 60 addresses in the area.
