The set of original settlements which were characterized among other things by an exploitation of obsidian at Teuchitan
Discovered in 1970, this ancient settlement area is located about sixty kilometres from Guadalajara. It is part of the Unesco world heritage since 2006. On a mound facing the Volcán Tequila, it is a site of more than 90 hectares that was occupied between 350 B.C. and 350 A.D. It was here that the original settlements were located, which were characterized, among other things, by the exploitation of obsidian. More than 24 pre-Hispanic mining sites have been found on the slopes of the volcano, which died out 220,000 years ago, while 89 ball fields have been discovered in the surrounding area. This ancient city, dedicated to the cult of the wind, is characterized by an original layout, since its squares, consisting of a circular pyramid, a patio and ceremonial platforms, are organized in concentric circles that follow one another. The site shows three of these circular pyramids, which archaeologists believe housed temples. A large production of ceramics has also been found, which act as a real codex that has made it possible to decipher daily life at the time of this culture of theOccident. The site includes an interpretation centre with a superb contemporary fresco reconstructing the city, including the stone buildings in the village below. To discover other archaeological pieces, go to the museum located in the same village.
