CASTELLO
Castle of the Lombardy period in Gesualdo, which became a stately home in Renaissance style
Founded in the Lombard era and occupied in the 12th century by Norman lords, the castle was home to Carlo Gesualdo, a musician and nobleman who was the head of a powerful fiefdom in the 16th and 17th centuries. Wishing to accommodate a princely court worthy of the time, he transformed the building into a Renaissance-style stately home, with a cortile, a loggia in the southern tower, new apartments and kitchens. The building was severely damaged by the earthquake of 1980 and is still undergoing restoration work.
