THE MEFIT
Small lake to be observed from a belvedere: the gases of the basement produce bubbles and fumes.
It is a small lake characterised by gases coming from the subsoil which, when in contact with water, cause bubbling and toxic fumes, rich in carbon dioxide and sulphuric acid. The name of the site comes from the goddess Mefite, worshipped by the Irpini, who dedicated a sanctuary to her in the 7th century BC. The objects discovered during the excavations, ex-voto and wooden statues, are exhibited in the Irpino Museum in Avellino. The natural site can be seen from a viewpoint; it is forbidden to approach it because of the toxicity of the fumes.
