LA MOLETA DEL REMEI
Guided tour of the Iberian village of La Moleta del Remei, located on the southern slopes of the Montsià mountain in Alcanar
A guided tour of the Iberian village of La Moleta del Remei promises a beautiful journey through the history of the Iberian people. Built on the southern slope of the Montsià mountain, the village is surrounded by an irregular ovoid fortified enclosure that contains a central core, rectangular spaces organized along the wall and streets where the inhabitants circulated. The excavated remains reveal a first phase of construction that began in the 7th century B.C., in which rectangular compartments were built one after the other along the enclosure wall. During a second phase, which began in the second half of the 6th century BC, defensive towers and storage areas were added. A third and last phase reveals, from the middle of the 4th century BC, the construction of new houses, the development of streets, as well as the extension of the wall, which illustrates the definite development of the village over the centuries, until its abandonment in the 2nd century when the city fell under Roman domination. The guided tour allows us to understand the role of the different spaces, whether private or communal, according to the remains that have been found during archaeological excavations (organic remains, metal objects, children's graves...) and to better understand the way of life of the first inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula.
At the foot of the site of La Moleta, we can observe the chapel of the Mare de Déu del Remei, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, celebrated on October 7.
