PIETAT HERMITAGE
Hermitage that preserves the remains of a primitive Romanesque and Gothic chapel, and a center for the interpretation of rock art
The hermitage of La Pietat stands on the southeast slope of the Serra de Godall. It was built in the 18th century, but it still preserves the remains of a primitive Romanesque and Gothic chapel. Its immaculate white façade offers a striking contrast with the natural setting that surrounds it. In addition to the church dedicated to the Virgin of Piety, the complex includes a restaurant, an inn and a picnic area. In the hermitage, there is also a center for the interpretation of rock art, which presents the frescoes that cover the caves of the Serra de Godall, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998.
Thecave paintings of the Serra de Godall are nearly 8000 years old and are spread over 11 Neolithic shelters, near the Pietat hermitage. Over nearly 500 meters of walls and rocky cavities, the set includes 400 figures more or less well preserved with hunting scenes, the best preserved of them being a deer represented in the first shelter. The site preserves one of the most important panels of Levantine art of the Mediterranean basin.
Lodging on site. Sleeping in the hermitage hostel is a real experience for those looking for a quiet and secluded place. There are two rooms (one with 10 beds, the other with 12 beds), a fully equipped kitchen, living rooms and a beautiful outdoor space with a barbecue and a splendid view of the valley! An address certainly not very intimate but impeccable to enjoy the deep serenity of the place.
