POBLE VELL
Remains that testify to the violent confrontations of the Spanish Civil War, the Battle of the Ebro that devastated the region
Nestled on the hill of La Muntera, the remains of the ancient village of Corbera d'Ebre bear witness to the violent confrontations of the Spanish Civil War, and more specifically to the infamous Battle of the Ebro that devastated the region between July 25 and November 17, 1938. The church of Sant Pere, now restored, stands proudly among the ruins of the village. Built in the 18th century on the site of an old Romanesque church, the building has a basilica plan with three naves and a Baroque style architecture. Its façade is divided into three vertical parts separated by pilasters. It is possible to visit the bell tower which offers a beautiful view of the surroundings! In the church square there is a sculpture in the shape of a boot (artist: Joan Brossa) inaugurated in 1988 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Ebro.
The alphabet of Freedom was added to the village in 1995, a collective work sculpting the 28 letters of the alphabet with the idea that the letters compose the words that allow people to build together a just and peaceful future. In 2000, the artist José Luis Terraza added his stone to the building with his Monument to the International Brigades, installed in the center of the village, whose 5 elements refer to the 5 continents from which the men and women who joined the International Brigades came. A touching work of art that brings hope to the world and to people who need it more and more every day.
