Shakers (which only remains a community in Maine) belong to a branch of Protestantism from Quakers born in the early th century. In South Union, such a community flourished from 1807 to 1922. The well-restored village site consists of several buildings, including the Centre House in 1824, a museum that houses one of the largest stoneware collections in the United States.
