TERMES ROMANES
Roman baths of Caldes de Montbui used by the inhabitants of Roman Hispania for medicinal purposes
One of the rare examples of Roman thermalism preserved in the peninsula. These remains, dating from the first century BC, culminate in a vast vaulted pool flanked by round arches made of red sandstone blocks. Although the thermal baths have been restored, they preserve here and there elements belonging to the original architecture, such as the reddish columns, part of the floor of the pool, the stairs and the water inlets and outlets. On the right side of the swimming pool, two small pools in the shape of semi-circular exedras have been discovered (they were used as private baths). It is known that the Roman Baths of Caldes were a caldarium (a hot pool) used by the inhabitants of Roman Hispania for medicinal purposes. However, the present remains are only the tip of the iceberg. The entire ancient thermal complex extends partly under the cobblestones of the Lion Fountain Square.
