GRENDELPOORT
Historic city gate, classified as a historical monument, made of marl and wood, located in Valkenburg
This historic town gate dates back to the 14th century, when it was called "Bergerpoort" or "Maestrichterpoort" (the places to which it led). In 1672, when the castle and fortifications were destroyed, the town was spared. Built of marl and wood, it has since been renovated (which explains the impeccable condition of its two towers). It is now called "Grendelpoort" after a nearby well. At its feet stands a large bronze statue of a doorman in traditional costume.
