SLUIS BELFRY
This square-shaped belfry with an inner tower and four corner turrets, houses many objects and works of art
The Sluis Belfry is an emblematic monument and the only belfry in the whole of the Netherlands! Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, it is distinguished by its square shape with an inner tower and four corner turrets. After enduring many hardships, including a historic fire and Allied bombing raids in 1944, the belfry was completely renovated in 1960, preserving its original beauty. Don't miss the magnificent wrought-iron door that welcomes visitors.
Today, the Belfry houses a fascinating museum dedicated to the history of the town and to Johan Hendrik van Dale, the famous lexicographer and well-known Sluis resident. The museum's collection includes many historical objects, as well as precious works of art, such as paintings by Rubens and Van Dijk. Visitors can explore two mini-cinemas, themed exhibitions, carefully restored period rooms and the splendid historic council chamber. From the belfry tower, after climbing its 142 steps, a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding area awaits you, rewarding the climb with a memorable experience.
Every Sunday, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm, a carillonneur plays the Belfry's carillon. Guided tours of the museum are available to learn more about the captivating history of Sluis and the surrounding area. In addition, the Belfry regularly hosts cultural and historical events, making it a lively and dynamic venue in the heart of the city.
