NEW PARLIAMENT
Also known as the Sri Lankan Parliament Building or the New Parliament Complex, this beautiful modern-style building is located on the island in the centre of Diyawannawa Lake, where the palace of King Vikramabahu III's minister, Nissaka Alakesvara, once stood. The island was later owned by Edward Walter Perera (1875-1953), one of the leading figures in the island's independence movement, before it became government property. The new Parliament building, designed by architect Geoffrey Bawa, was built between 1979 and 1982 and was inaugurated by parliamentarians in April 1982.
