STIFTSMUSEUM
The Stiftsmuseum exhibits the treasure of the collegiate church of St. Peter and St. Alexander, with the fascinating altarpiece of St. Magdalene.
Next to the beautiful Basilica of St. Peter and St. Alexander is the Stiftsmuseum, which exhibits the treasure of the collegiate church. The centrepiece of the museum is the altarpiece of St. Magdalene, painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder in 1525. It features a fascinating bestiary as well as a curious bare ass in the foreground. The latter was uncovered during recent restoration work. Some prudes had later chosen to hide this protruding posterior behind a bush. It is now back as Cranach painted it.
