MAHICAO
In the heart of the magnificent Jardins d'Aïda, within the grounds of the Miam Miam restaurant, the MAHICAO (Musée d'Art et d'Histoire des Cultures d'Afrique de l'Ouest) is an exceptional museum showcasing authentic works of African art from different periods. Sculptures, masks, archaeological pieces, traditional jewelry, textiles, ancient costumes... a total of almost 500 objects retrace the history of West Africa, from the remote Saharan Neolithic era to the middle of the 20th century. They come from the personal collection of Reginald Groux, an expert and former teacher of African art, as well as from numerous donors who have contributed to this cultural project. In a Sudanese-style building, visitors stroll through aisles of shells and discover unique pieces, arranged chronologically and highlighted by beautiful lighting. Explanatory panels punctuate the tour, helping visitors to better understand the history of West Africa. One of the rooms contains some forty photographs of African art masterpieces donated by the Barbier-Müeller Museum in Geneva, and a fine library features numerous books on African art and culture, including illustrated works for children. A museum we highly recommend for its unique pieces and pleasant setting. Afterwards, you can enjoy the Miam Miam restaurant, which serves delicious cuisine with a variety of influences.
