Standing proudly on the heights of the town, Lewes Castle is often the first building you see when approaching the town. It is the town's highest point and was built in 1069, on the initiative of William de Warenne, William the Conqueror's companion in his conquest of England. Now owned by the Sussex Archeological Society, you can visit the remains and enjoy the sweeping views they command over the Downs and surrounding countryside. You can also visit the adjacent Museum of Sussex Archaeology.
