SAN FRANCISCO DE ASIS
This magnificent adobe church is one of the most painted, if not photographed, religious monuments in New Mexico
A few miles south of Taos, this magnificent adobe church, built between 1710 and 1755, is among the most painted, if not photographed, religious monuments in New Mexico. Inside, the church has a remarkable chevet as well as a sublime painted wooden altarpiece. It was here that the Spaniards settled after the rebellion of 1680, preferring it to the town of Taos. The church also gained notoriety when Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams proclaimed their fascination with this historic building. There is a small gift shop on site.
