TAOS ART MUSEUM AT FECHIN HOUSE
This museum is located in the house of a Russian artist, Nicolai Fechin, whose work consisted in highlighting the American Indians
Very beautiful museum located in the sublime house of a Russian artist of the XIXth and XXth century, Nicolai Fechin, whose work consisted mainly in putting in light the Amerindians. The main idea here is to highlight the work of Taos artists in order to contribute to the influence of local art. You will find a large selection of works by the Taos Society of Artists, an organization founded by artists Joseph Henry Sharp, who arrived in Taos in 1893, Ernest Blumenschein and Bert Phillips, Native American culture enthusiasts who joined the first in 1898, fell in love with the Taos pueblo, its people and the landscapes of the region, and decided to stay. They were soon joined by E. Irving Couse, Oscar E. Berninghaus and the talented William Herbert Dunton to form the "Taos Six" and thus found in 1915 this Taos Society of Artists. The art colony continued to grow, with new members who had to work in Taos for at least three consecutive years, had to show an interest and talent in the representation of native subjects and characters, and had to have exhibited in respectable galleries. To admire these creations is to understand how the Taos art colony went from local esteem to international recognition. In addition to the paintings, there are many photographs on display. There is also a small store selling great books.
