Manama Souk in the historic heart of the capital, featuring air-conditioned covered galleries, a gold souk, a fish market, etc.

Manama's souk, the historic heart of the capital, is made up of several interlocking markets where you can find just about anything you can bargain for. Largely deserted by Bahrainis, the immigrant communities have made it their favorite neighborhood. If it is easy to get lost in the multitude of small streets, the inhabitants will gladly guide you to the exit. Everywhere, traditional cafés, marked by a string of benches on the street, have taken up residence. They are mostly frequented by men at breakfast. The souk has kept an authenticity that you can't find anywhere else in Bahrain.

The covered galleries. Bab Al Bahrain opens onto a pedestrian covered gallery. On your left, the different shops are held by the oldest merchant families of the country. But beware, prices are high. Air-conditioned galleries start on the right. On the first floor, restaurants and cafés follow one another. Upstairs, stores sell rather luxurious products.

Souk of electronics. Most of the stores around the covered galleries sell electronic junk. Handy, if you are looking for a charger. Prices are dry, so don't hesitate to ask for half to start the negotiation.

Gold Souk. Renowned for their gold work combined with Bahraini pearls, the artisans are at work in their stores. Their skills are the result of centuries of making exceptional jewelry. This is the ideal place to buy local pearls, without forgetting to ask for a certificate of authenticity.

Little India. Mostly from South India, Tamils and Keralites share the pavement, with a Hindu temple, budget restaurants, and many stalls, mostly selling spices.

Fish market and Central Market. Located at the entrance of the souk, west of Bab Al Bahrain, this fish market is a modern extension of the souk. It is designed to clear the crowded streets of the old city. It takes 5 to 10 minutes to walk from the entrance of the souk. The best time to go is at dawn, when fishermen unload their nightly catch.

Craft Center. Just south of the souk, near the Muslim cemetery, a center has been opened by the government to promote local crafts. You can buy traditional jewelry, trinkets made of ceramic, wood or metal and embroidered fabrics. The artisans are usually on site in the morning.
