SHAIKH EBRAHIM CENTER
Non-governmental organization that transforms Muharraq's most beautiful traditional houses into cultural centers
The Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Center for Culture was opened in 2002. This non-governmental organization is dedicated to restoring the most beautiful traditional houses in Muharraq and turning them into cultural centers. With more than a dozen completed works, the Shaikh Ibrahim Center has given a new lease on life to these houses, which were often neglected in the past. Some function as small museums or specialized centers, such as the house of Mohammed Bin Faris dedicated to "sut" music or the house of Abdullah Al Zayed focused on the history of the press in Bahrain.
The Center for Research and Culture, lost in the heart of old Muharraq is the former majlis (reception room) of Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa. The sixteenth son of the fourth emir of Bahrain, this poet who died in 1933 created some of the finest masterpieces of Bahraini literature. His former home now houses a conference and debate center, a library, offices, and all information related to the center's properties. Over 400 writers, philosophers, thinkers and poets have shared their art in this house. An interactive device will take you back in time through videos and archival photographs displayed in the rooms of the house. One of the rooms of the house has been preserved as is, with a discreet renovation, called "Memory of the house". A beautiful glimpse of the mix of refinement and simplicity that characterizes the traditional architecture of the kingdom.
